Our Beginnings

Almost 140 years of heritage

Founded in 1885 by George J. Hoey and James A. Denning, the firm of Hoey & Denning has been synonymous in Irish legal circles for almost 140 years.

Initially based in Trinity Street in Dublin 2 and Tullamore, Co. Offaly the firm grew significantly in the early twentieth Century.

1916

Henry Francis Brenan joined the partnership in 1916 following James A. Denning’s appointment as Taxing Master in 1914. With James A. Denning getting on in years, Henry Francis Brenan ran the practice for a number of years.

1937-1971

Séamus Mahon (father of Brian, Raymond, Dermot) joined the firm in 1937 and took over the practice from Brenan in 1944. Brian Mahon joined the practice in 1970 and took over the running of the practice in 1976 upon Séamus Mahon’s appointment as a District Justice.

1990 onwards

More recently Seamus Mahon’s grandchildren Emily and Barry have joined the practice. In addition, to the Mahon’s, Hoey and Denning have benefited greatly from the experience and knowledge of two other partners, Michael Byrne (Partner from 1990 – 2010) and Patrick Fox who joined the practice in 2008 and became a Partner in 2023.
